That’s Horrifyingly Funny

A few weeks ago Karen and I had the chance to get away for a Saturday and see a few movies. We saw “The Grudge” and “I Heart Huckabees” to completely opposite movies but both extremely good. The Grudge made both of us pretty freaked out. That little kid you may have seen in the trailers is one spooky-ass kid and ranks up there with Damien from “The Omen” and Regan from “The Exorcist.” The movie really underplays the typical jumps and scares but when they do show up they will scare the bajeebees out of you. The Grudge is a remake of a very spooky Japanese horror film called Ju On but uses the original’s director and this time stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Bill Pullman and some WB star teen idol guy. It really takes a new spin on the old fashioned haunted house story but with some great Japanese culture, spiritualism, and mythology. Very Creepy and much like its American brother remake “The Ring,” it has some truly disturbing imagery.

Next up is “I Heart Huckabees.” This is one bizarre comedy much in the vein of “Rushmore” and “The Royal Tenebaums.” It’s basically about a guy who has a run in with an African American fellow in a bellhop suit and hires a pair of existential detectives to find out the significance of the coincidental meetings. From there it’s a study of how either everything is connected or maybe nothing is connected and therefore inconsequential. If you liked either of the movies listed above or like this directors work you will really get a kick out of it. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and it was a great movie to see after the exhausting “Grudge.” This movie stars Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jason Schwartzman, Naomi Watts, Jude Law, and a bizarre performance by Marky Mark himself Mark Wahlberg. This is not your typical “leave your brain at the door” comedy, so put on your thinking caps and have a good laugh with a bunch of good actors who pull off some exceptional performances!
