Closing Out January
What’s new with the Evanskeys lately? Just been busy with school, work and projects. LBCC has been fun and although I am disappointed in the registration procedures I am happy that I was able to get into my English class that I needed. The stories for the most part have been fun to read and thought provoking.
Some of my personal favorite stories include:
- A Scandal in Bohemia
- The Price of Eggs in China
- Cathedral
- Everyday Use
…and some of fav poems are:
- Ballad of Birmingham
- How to Watch Your Brother Die
Some really good stuff and great topics for discussions on life, society, family and cultural heritage, personal beliefs, racism, bigotry and many other good debatable topics. On other school news, I am working on my final which will actually be at the end of March for my programming class. My final consists of me building an actual video game from scratch using my own code. Right now the idea I am working on is some really cool animated gifs I built using Jaden as a “Pac-Man” type character who moves around the field (your screen) and eats certain items but is being chased by Scooby-Doo-like villains which turn from pursuer to pursued when Jaden-Man eats one of the four blinking cookie icons in each corner of the screen. I have the animated character built and some designs laid out already. As soon I get further along I’ll post it online so all of you can play it!
On the home front, Karen and I are getting the materials ready for some major changes to the front of the house. We are extending the drive by five extra feet back toward the house and three feet wider. We are also removing our big tree near the kitchen and the ficus tree near the garage and adding in a mid-century style planter wall about a foot high. Here’s a look at the style of stone we chose to complete that 50s mid century look.

Also, I will post some before and after photos when the work is done.
Jaden is hammering through school like a pro. He received a Literacy Award in December for being an outstanding reader and continues to impress the hell out of us. This kid is awesome smarty pants! Now I gotta get him started on those Harry Potter books… hehe, okay maybe in a couple of years. He is also learning to ride skateboards, razors, and his bike (hopefully without training wheels soon!).
Hope all is good with you fellow readers.

If you wanted to be a bad dad, you could have another kid and then, instead of Harry Potter, throw “How to watch your brother die” at him. Just kidding. Give him the Hardy Boys! They rule when you’re under 10.

I was actually thinking about giving him some Hardy Boys books just the other day. Weird.

I got out my Hardy Boys and Choose Your Own Adventures for my 8-yr-old boy. I don’t think he’s ready for the Hardy Boys… might be more of a 9 or 10 thing. He is enjoying the CYOA books, but not voraciously. I was reading some of it out loud to the younger sister and noticed some pretty advanced words for an 8-yr-old. Checked the inside cover of the CYOA and it said “10 and up”. So on second thought, I need to check on the Hardy Boys… maybe they would be better for an 8-yr-old.

Yeah I’m keeping it at 5-6 year old levels right now and watching where he struggles and where he cruises through easily. I am impressed though with his ability to sound out or spell out the word then say it clearly and ask me or Karen what it means if he doesn’t understand it.
