Weekend Oscar Fun
So this weekend we had all sorts of fun things planned except for me getting sick. Well I toughed it out and we managed to get some fun things accomplished. First off the list was Jaden got to visit with grandma and great grandma over the 2 1/2 days which gave Karen and me to finally get out to see some films that don’t involve plots that have talking dogs or involve trolls, hobgoblins, and anything closely related to the Harry Potter fantasy element. So Friday night we headed to our local theater to see one of the nominated best picture films, No Country For Old Men. Stunning! This film is so beautifully crafted and just continues my love for all things Coen Brothers! Javier Bardem is so brilliant in this film that I can’t stop talking this thing up. I have a feeling his little catch phrase in the movie is going to take its seat next to the many other great movie quotes of all time, “Call it friend-o.” Tommy Lee Jones was at his most subtle, yet best and Josh Brolin put in a wow performance! These guys collaborated on one of the best movies of all time. AFI should redo their Top 100 films right now!
The second feature we took in was Micheal Clayton and man was that another top notch performance. George Clooney seems to know how to own the screen. I know the girls and maybe a few guys would say it’s all about his looks but man he makes you forget the good looks and charm in this movie and really feel for these characters… and not always in a good way. Speaking of not a good way Tilda Swinton plays ruthless and vulnerable so wickedly good that my palms started sweating during her scenes. She makes corporate evil look brilliant, methodical, and with the meticulous precision of a brain surgeon cutting into someone blindfolded. She embodies the corporate dark side perfectly! There are other actors I am probably leaving out but these are the real standouts here and I highly suggest catching these in your neighborhood theater as soon as possible. Karen and I caught Micheal Clayton at the 21 and over showing at the Arclight in Hollywood and that is such a sweet, sweet theater that I know we are already planning our next trip out there.
We tried to make Juno for our third movie but we messed up the showtimes and thusly missed what is probably another great movie so when we do get around to seeing it you can bet I will post some info on it.
Anyway, Jaden had a great time with grandma and great grandma and although being under the weather I had a great time with Karen seeing some truly wonderful entertainment this weekend and to cap it all off we sat back and watch a very nice 80th Academy Awards show with the always funny Jon Stewart.
