Month of Mad Phat Fun - Part I

Posted by Scott in entertainment, family, friends

Wow! Was this site is in need of an update or what, so let’s roll it double time and back this thing up a few weeks.

Comic Con (aka Geek Mecca)
chewie The weekend of the July 16th, I headed down early in the morning to the San Diego Comic-Con to meet up with some friends of mine. I rolled into town at about 10ish and made my way to the convention center to meet up with my buddy Pat and Dan and check out geek central. My first stop was meeting up with Pat and cruising the vendor booths on the main floor. We checked out a few things and then headed back to the infamous Hall H, where the main events were happening all day long. Pat took off and I met Dan who was doing an all-day sit-in for Hall H (he actually caved and split after a few hours). I had already missed the Superman presentation but managed to sneak in to see the Aeon Flux/Charlize Theron panel and grab a few photos of the blond African hotness. As good looking as she is, she has the personality of a log… boring. The trailer seemed pretty cool and I might check out the movie when it hits theaters. I stuck around for the AWESOME Kevin Smith panel and damn if that guy does not get boring EVER! Kevin talked his usual smack on homosexuality, Catholics, and comic geeks and then he headed into his 3 part story arc and appearance in DeGrassi, a Canadian teen soap, and finally brought out the director of Donnie Darko to talk about the new movie they are doing together (that’s when I split). The rest of the day was just shopping and meeting the famous people. In the Autograph area, I ended up meeting and taking photos with Erin Grey, the cast of Superman I and II (yes, Margot Kidder was there!), cast members from Buffy, one the Lone Gunmen from the X-Files, and tons of costumed people! I ended up staying all day and night where I met up with Pat and Dan again and where we watched the masquerade ball which was a huge showcase of all of the costumes from that day. The winner in my book was the guy who dressed up as General Grievous from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. However, the best choreography had to go to the Nightcrawler/Lara Croft fight duo. This was hands down the best year yet at Comic-Con and I can’t wait until next year.

Boat Time and Beck
The week following the Con our boat was in the shop getting some carburetor work done on it to see if that would help the “cold” starting problem we’ve been having. We picked it up on Saturday morning and took it out for the day on Saturday and sometime during the fun, Karen’s friend Cris called to remind us that we had a concert to go to that night! We totally forgot that we had Beck tickets and had to do some serious last minute scurrying to find a sitter and get ready in record breaking time, which we did! The show was unbelievable and Beck is a mass of pure musical genius. He played so many hits, rarities, and odd variations of his songs that I felt like I was in 60s psychedelic trip. Also, it was really good to hear Loser again live after so many years of not playing it and when he ended the song in a trippy drum solo he performed himself I was blown away. The guy could make music from dirt and I’d still listen to it. Over all, I suggest seeing beck live whenever you get the chance. He is extremely talented and has a great backing band that really delivers fun musical mayhem.

The next day Karen and I called up our newly married friends Mark and Katie to come sail away for some fun on the beach and boat near our house. All day long we had a blast and Jaden really liked playing with Katie. We had one moment where the boat wouldn’t start but after about 15 minutes of drifting I finally got it started and scooted everyone to shore. Mark and I then decided to test it out for ourselves and it started right up and we loaded everyone up and went cruising through the Naples canals. Thanks Trudi, Frank, their kids, and Mark and Katie for a really great weekend!
