March
March seemed liked it was non stop rollercoaster. I started back to school on March 3rd by taking Pysch305 for 4 hours every Tuesday for 8 weeks. We also started the month off with our first Roller Derby game with our friends Steve, Kerri, and Ian. It was crazy wild watching these girls go ballistic on each other and even saw some intense injuries… blood on the concrete! To top of our first weekend, Karen and I went to see The Watchmen at the Arclight in Hollywood and it was a lot of fun and the movie was pretty dang entertaining. Some of it seemed a bit hyper kinetic and the use of ultra slow-mo to sped up fast-mo shots seemed like overkill at some points but I really liked the overall feel of the movie. Can’t wait for the 3 ½ hour DVD version!
The following weekend was one we were really amped up for. Karen and I were heading to the Long Beach Terrace Theater to see Joel McHale for the 2nd time. Our friends Kim and Andrew were cool to pick up our extra tickets and we decided to meet up at the Auld Dubliner off Pine Avenue right across the street from the theater. Being that it was the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day, the place was pretty wicked packed. After a great meal and a few drinks, we headed off to the show and had a blast. The opener was pretty good but I can’t remember the guys name right now and Joel is always a fun time. After the show we headed back to the Dubliner and had a few more drinks and watched a traditional Irish band cranking out the Irish drinking songs! The rest of the weekend was filled with BBQs at our friends Karen & Sean’s on Saturday and then Steve & Kerri’s on Sunday.
Weekend number 3 was our 7th Anniversary and my mom came out to watch Jaden while Karen and I got to take a weekend break. Friday night was a casual night with dinner and then off to see “I Love You, Man!” another comedy in the same vein as the Judd Apatow films and is, I’m proud to say, totally hilarious! Paul Rudd is dead-on brilliant with his nice guy doofus routine and I see this one in the same league as “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” The next day we packed up the Jeep and headed off to Palm Springs to do a day at the Spa Casino and Resort. I can’t praise the “Taking of the Waters” therapy sessions they have there enough and they are so reasonably priced it is amazing that place isn’t lined with people every day! After a nice day in Palm Springs we headed home for a nice peaceful Sunday with our little family.
We did catch one more film in March and this time it was a family film, Monsters Vs. Aliens and a bunch of us went to go see it. Jaden, Karen and I all gave a decent thumbs up. Not as good as a Pixar film but still fun and entertaining.
April
I started off April with a bang. My buddy Mark invited me to a Dodger game on Thursday night and it turns out we made it a guys night out. Dave, An old school friend of mine and Mark’s was there and another good friend of Mark’s, Blair. The game was good and the Dodgers won and we got to see Manny play before the big drug fiasco so that was kind of cool. After the game, the guys wanted to head to a local bar for a drink and we ended up in Chinatown where it turns out they were filming the “squeekuel” to Alvin and the Chipmunks live action film. I snapped a few shots before they were aware and chased us out of there. Then someone suggested we head to downtown LA to the Standard Hotel and check out the hipster crowd. The rooftop bar is amazing and very reminiscent of a 60s/70s Bond vibe and will have to make it a point to go there again.
The weekend brought the Evanskeys our first garage sale in some time. A lot has changed and we were hit with some new funky laws in Long Beach about doing the sale but overall it was fun haggling with people over extremely cheap stuff. Karen’s friend Diane stopped by and brought evil donuts for us and Kim and Andrew stopped by to hang out and keep us company. Andrew ended up leaving with a new receiver and 100-disc CD changer.
The day of my birthday Karen and I went out to Lucille’s for some incredible birthday grub and afterwards we headed over to the Cerritos Mall for some shopping where I got punk rock green pants and a pair of Bad Brains vans hi-tops. My birthday dinner and all night festivities was an all out blast! We started off the night at Gladstone’s and had a good mix of old and new friends enjoying good conversation, good food and plenty of good drinks. After dinner, the group went to see our friend Sam play at an Irish pub in city of Orange where drinking, dancing and good vibes were being had by everyone. I want to thank Karen for putting everything together and for a really fun birthday. Also, Sam & Iris, Kim & Andrew, Chris & Andy, Steve & Kerri, Lee, and Gordon for all making it to the festivities and having such a fun time. The next weekend we finally got a chance to take the boat out for the first time this year. Our friends Dan & Lee came onboard as well as Karen’s coworker Chris. We headed out north first to one of our newer fun spots to go to, Palos Verde peninsula and the water was gorgeous. Beautiful swells for a nice smooth ride out. We turned back and headed south and I took the newbies for a tour of Huntington Harbor and then finally headed back to Long Beach to drop everyone off for the day.
The month wrapped up with the Emerson food fundraiser at Red Robin and the three of us headed over for some greasy burgers and ended up meeting our friend Lisa and her daughter Lisette there. We ended up back at their place after dinner where Jaden and Lisette and her brother Raymond got to play awhile to close out the night and the month.
***Back to the present… We are leaving on a cruise in a week and probably won’t be updating til we get back. I’ll try to get one more post out before the big trip but when I get back I will try to get everyone up to speed on on the past present and photos! Until then Peace, Love and all other types of good stuff from the Evanskeys***
